A 13-member Class XI team from Ariyakudi Government Higher Secondary School in Sivagangai district, Tamil Nadu, has successfully launched a 600-gram mini satellite named Vikko Sat-1. The student-built payload rose to 22 km in the stratosphere on 13 February and was later recovered safely. The mission was designed to detect fungal spores in the upper atmosphere using five specialised sensors, making it a notable example of school-level scientific innovation with agricultural relevance.
Mission Objective
The primary aim of Vikko Sat-1 was to study fungal spores at high altitude. These biological particles matter because they can affect crop health and environmental cycles. By observing them in the stratosphere, the students sought to collect data that is difficult to obtain through ground-based methods.
Design And Launch
The device was developed over six months by the students themselves. It was launched using a helium balloon and carried adhesive surfaces and sensors to capture samples. The compact payload weighed only 600 grams, yet it was engineered to operate in the thin air and low temperatures of the stratosphere.
