Wild Buffalo Reintroduced In Kanha Reserve

Wild Buffalo Reintroduced In Kanha Reserve

Wild buffalo are scheduled for reintroduction in the Supkhar and Topla regions of Balaghat district in Madhya Pradesh’s Kanha Tiger Reserve on 28 April 2026. The species has been extinct in Madhya Pradesh for more than 100 years, and the programme includes a phased translocation from Kaziranga National Park in Assam.

Wild Buffalo As A Species

Wild buffalo, or the wild water buffalo, is listed as Bubalus arnee and is a Schedule I species under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 in India. It is one of the largest extant bovines in Asia and is associated with wet grasslands, marshes, and riverine habitats.

Kanha Tiger Reserve Habitat

Kanha Tiger Reserve is located in Madhya Pradesh and includes grassland and forest ecosystems in the Maikal hills region. The reserve’s grasslands have been identified as suitable habitat for the species through scientific assessment by the Wildlife Institute of India.

  • The initial founder group will consist of three female wild buffaloes and one male wild buffalo.
  • A total of 50 wild buffaloes are planned for translocation from Kaziranga National Park to Kanha Tiger Reserve.
  • Eight buffaloes are scheduled for transfer in the current season.
  • The project plans to introduce 12 to 15 wild buffaloes annually during the first three years.

Biodiversity Exchange With Assam

The reintroduction is linked to a biodiversity exchange between Madhya Pradesh and Assam. Madhya Pradesh is to receive two pairs of rhinoceroses for Bhopal’s Van Vihar National Park, and Assam is to receive three tigers and six crocodiles. The programme is being implemented under the supervision of forest officials and veterinarians from both states. Kanha Tiger Reserve is one of India’s major tiger reserves and a key protected area in central India.
