PM Surya Ghar Scheme Expands Rooftop Solar Access

PM Surya Ghar Scheme Expands Rooftop Solar Access

The PM Surya Ghar – Muft Bijli Yojana has expanded rapidly across India, with more than 26 lakh households now benefiting from rooftop solar systems. The scheme aims to make household solar power affordable, reduce electricity costs, and accelerate clean energy adoption at the residential level.

Scheme Progress

Since its launch in February 2024, the programme has supported the installation of 20,85,514 rooftop solar systems nationwide. These systems have provided solar power access to 26,14,446 households. Central Financial Assistance of Rs 14,771.82 crore has been disbursed up to December 2025 to support the installations.

How the Scheme Works

  • Eligible residential electricity consumers with grid-connected connections can apply through the national portal.
  • The scheme supports rooftop solar installation on homes to promote decentralised renewable energy generation.
  • It is designed to reduce dependence on conventional power sources and improve access to clean electricity.

Environmental and Energy Impact

The government estimates that rooftop solar systems in one crore households could generate up to 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity over a 25-year lifespan. This could also reduce around 720 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. The scheme therefore has both energy security and climate benefits.

State-wise Adoption

Adoption has varied across states and Union Territories. Gujarat leads with over 5.15 lakh installations, benefiting more than 7.41 lakh households. Maharashtra follows with nearly 3.92 lakh systems, while Uttar Pradesh has over 3.26 lakh installations. Several other states, including Kerala, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Assam, have also recorded progress.
