India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem received a boost as the Missile Integration facility at Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru, was inaugurated, alongside the flag-off of the Akash 3rd and 4th Regiment Combat Systems and the unveiling of the Mountain Fire Control Radar. The event also marked the remote inauguration of the Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence (CoE-AI) in Pune and the formal launch of BEL’s AI Policy. The developments underline India’s push towards indigenisation, advanced electronics, and AI-enabled defence capabilities.
New Indigenous Defence Capabilities
BEL showcased a range of indigenous systems developed for modern warfare, including electronic warfare, avionics, naval platforms, electro-optics, and tank electronics. The company’s network-centric systems were brought into light for improving real-time data sharing, decision support, and combat effectiveness. The new facilities are expected to strengthen domestic production and integration of advanced weapon systems.
Focus on R&D and Major Programmes
BEL’s ongoing research and development work was linked to major national defence projects such as:
- QRSAM and other air defence systems
- LCA Mk II and AMCA
- Project Kusha
- Counter-drone systems
- Naval weapon control systems
These initiatives are aimed at reducing import dependence and improving operational readiness across land, air, naval, and strategic domains.
AI, Quantum Computing and Battlefield Change
The event brought into light the growing role of AI and quantum computing in real-time decision-making, autonomous systems, cyber defence, and precision operations. Indigenous air defence and anti-drone systems were noted for their role in neutralising threats during Operation Sindoor. The emphasis was on developing self-reliant technologies that can match global standards and support future battlefield requirements.
Start-ups, Academia and Innovation Ecosystem
BEL also presented indigenisation efforts from its research centres and innovation units, along with products developed by start-ups and industry partners. The interaction with young scientists and start-ups stressed cross-disciplinary collaboration, rapid prototyping, and agile product development. The event reflected India’s broader aim of building a strong defence innovation ecosystem aligned with Viksit Bharat.
