The Himachal Pradesh government is expanding eco-tourism in Kullu district by developing unexplored tourist locations under its forest-based tourism model. The Forest Department, Kullu Circle, has identified more than 16 eco-tourism sites, with five already allotted through open auction. These sites are being developed on one hectare of forest land each to provide regulated tourist facilities while generating revenue and local employment.
Eco-Tourism Expansion in Kullu
Kullu district is being positioned as a major eco-tourism destination in Himachal Pradesh. The identified sites include Kais Dhar, Solang Nala, Kasol, Sumaropa and Kheerganga-Bindravani. These locations are part of a wider plan to promote nature-based tourism in less explored areas.
Revenue and Auction Model
The five allotted sites are generating an annual revenue of around Rs 1.5 crore for the Forest Department. The sites are auctioned for a period of 10 years, with a possible extension of up to five more years. This model is intended to ensure long-term management and steady income generation.
Economic and Employment Impact
The initiative is aimed at strengthening the rural economy in Kullu district. It is also expected to create employment opportunities for local youth through tourism services, site management and allied activities. The development approach seeks to balance tourism growth with environmental conservation.
Future Site Identification and Policy Significance
In addition to the five allotted sites, nine more eco-tourism sites have been identified in the district. The project reflects a broader policy focus on sustainable tourism, forest-based livelihoods and decentralised economic development in Himalayan regions.
