A rare melanistic spotted deer, or chital, has been sighted in the Umred–Pauni–Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary near Nagpur. The animal’s dark, almost black coat is caused by melanism, a genetic condition that leads to excess pigmentation. Such sightings are uncommon because chitals are usually identified by their reddish-brown body with white spots.
Rare Wildlife Sighting
The deer was observed during routine monitoring inside the sanctuary. Wildlife experts consider the sighting notable because melanistic chitals are rarely recorded in the wild. The unusual colouration makes the animal stand out sharply from the typical population.
About Melanism
Melanism is a genetic trait that increases dark pigment in the skin or fur. In deer, it can result in a near-black appearance. It is different from albinism, which causes a lack of pigment. Such genetic variations are of scientific interest because they help in studying adaptation, inheritance, and biodiversity.
Significance of the Sanctuary
Umred–Pauni–Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary is an important protected area in Maharashtra. It supports diverse fauna and is known for conservation value in the Vidarbha region. Rare sightings like this underline the ecological richness of the habitat and the importance of habitat protection, monitoring, and anti-poaching measures.
Conservation Relevance
The sighting has renewed attention on wildlife documentation and species monitoring in protected areas. It also marks the need to preserve forest corridors and natural habitats that support genetic diversity in wild populations.
