Discovery of Antaram idukki Moth Genus in Western Ghats

On 24 June 2026 researchers published the description of a new tiger moth genus and species, Antaram idukki, from Idukki district in the southern Western Ghats.

Taxonomy & Description

  • Scientific name: Antaram idukki — new genus and species described 24 June 2026 in the Journal of the Lepidopterists’ Society.
  • Higher classification: Subfamily Arctiinae, family Erebidae (tiger moths).
  • Diagnostic characters: Distinct combination of external and genital morphological features separating Antaram from related genera.
  • Name etymology: Genus name derives from Sanskrit meaning “difference”.

Distribution, Ecology & Conservation

  • Type locality: Idukki district, Kerala (southern Western Ghats).
  • Range: Currently known only from Idukki; appears extremely rare.
  • Life history: Larval host plant and developmental biology remain unknown.
  • Threats in region: Habitat degradation, unregulated tourism, land-use change and human–wildlife conflict in parts of the Western Ghats.
  • Biogeographic context: Western Ghats is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of eight global biodiversity hotspots.
