Ayushman Bharat has recorded major progress in hospital empanelment, digital health adoption and primary healthcare expansion. The programme now covers a wider network of private hospitals, health accounts and upgraded primary care centres, while also extending support to senior citizens under a special initiative. These developments strengthen access to affordable healthcare and move India closer to universal health coverage.
Private Hospital Empanelment
More than 15,733 private hospitals have been empanelled under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) as of 31 December 2025. Of these, 1,259 hospitals are in aspirational districts. This expansion improves access to secondary and tertiary care, especially in underserved regions.
Digital Health Infrastructure
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) has accelerated the creation of Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA). In 2025-26, 8.79 crore ABHA cards were generated by 28 January 2026. The number stood at 22.28 crore in 2023-24 and 17.69 crore in 2024-25. The steady rise shows wider adoption of digital health services across the country.
Primary Healthcare Through AAMs
A total of 1,82,944 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs have been operationalised by upgrading Sub Health Centres and Primary Health Centres. These centres provide 12 comprehensive packages of primary healthcare services. The service basket includes maternal and child health, communicable and non-communicable diseases, mental health, elderly care, palliative care, oral and ENT care, and basic emergency services. The essential medicines and diagnostics list has also been expanded for better service delivery.
Senior Citizen Coverage Under Vay Vandana
The Ayushman Vay Vandana initiative, launched in October 2024, extends AB-PMJAY benefits to people aged 70 years and above, irrespective of socio-economic status. More than 96.73 lakh cards have been issued so far. Hospital admissions worth ₹2,154.37 crore have been authorised under the scheme, including substantial coverage for both female and male beneficiaries.
