Brandt’s Hedgehog Found in Jammu and Kashmir

Brandt’s Hedgehog Found in Jammu and Kashmir

A new species of hedgehog has been recorded in Jammu and Kashmir after DNA analysis and morphological study confirmed it as Brandt’s hedgehog (Paraechinus hypomelas). The animal was first sighted in the Rajouri-Poonch sector in 2024, marking the first official hedgehog sighting in the Union Territory. The finding adds a new mammal species to India’s biodiversity record and has implications for wildlife research and conservation.

Discovery in Rajouri-Poonch Sector

The hedgehog was initially mistaken for a long-eared Indian hedgehog. Later field observation, capture, and examination showed that it was different from known Indian species. The animal was found in the ecotone zone, the buffer area between agricultural land and forest cover. More sightings followed after the first capture, including male, female, and young individuals.

Scientific Confirmation

Researchers used DNA profiling, morphometric study, and behavioural observation to identify the species. The analysis matched the animal with Brandt’s hedgehog, which is known from countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Yemen. Until now, it had not been reported from India.

Biodiversity Significance

The discovery is considered an important addition to the fauna of Jammu and Kashmir and India. It suggests a possible range expansion of the species. Ecological factors such as climate change, habitat connectivity, and food availability may have contributed to its presence in the region.

Conservation and Further Study

The report recommends targeted conservation measures and detailed habitat analysis. It also calls for monitoring population dynamics and suitable habitat sites. The species is believed to feed mainly on rats and may play a role in local ecosystem balance. Further research papers are expected to support formal scientific recognition of the finding.
