Bundelkhand has been identified as a region with strong potential to lead India’s pulses revolution, with emphasis on linking agricultural research, farmer training and field-level innovation. The focus was brought into light at the third convocation of Rani Lakshmi Bai Central Agricultural University in Jhansi, where new academic achievements, research facilities and extension initiatives were also showcased.
Convocation and Academic Milestone
The university conferred degrees on 365 students and awarded gold medals to 15 meritorious scholars. The degrees included 235 undergraduate, 127 postgraduate and 3 Ph.D. students. The event began with the singing of Vande Mataram and included a Guard of Honour by NCC cadets. New facilities such as the Krishi Vigyan Mandap were also inaugurated on the campus.
Bundelkhand and Pulses Potential
Bundelkhand’s soil and climate were brought into light as suitable for expanding pulses cultivation. The region was described as capable of becoming a centre for a new pulses revolution. The broader idea was that India’s food security gains must now be matched by improved nutrition, crop diversification and higher productivity in pulses and oilseeds.
Farm Innovation and Digital Support
The role of scientific research in reaching farmers was stressed. The government’s Direct Benefit Transfer system for fertiliser subsidies was noted as a step towards greater transparency. Farmer IDs are being created at scale, and digital extension through the Bharat Extension Platform is helping farmers receive crop-related information on mobile phones. The message was that laboratory research must translate into practical field solutions.
University Growth and Future Focus
The university has expanded from five students in 2014 to 1,100 students, with strong participation by girl students. It has developed training and demonstration facilities, including polyhouse units, high-tech nurseries, integrated farming models and crop demonstration fields. New colleges in fisheries, veterinary sciences and horticulture are also being developed, reflecting a wider push towards agricultural education, innovation and entrepreneurship.
