CARI Bengaluru Gets ISO 15189 Accreditation

CARI Bengaluru Gets ISO 15189 Accreditation

The Clinical Laboratory at the Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), Bengaluru, has received ISO 15189:2022 accreditation for Biochemistry and Haematology. It is the first institute under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) to achieve this standard. The recognition marks a major step in quality-assured diagnostics within the Ministry of Ayush ecosystem and strengthens the role of laboratory science in Ayurveda-based care.

What the Accreditation Means

ISO 15189:2022 is an international standard for medical laboratories. It focuses on technical competence, quality management, and reliable test results. The accreditation assures patients that diagnostic services meet globally accepted standards for accuracy and safety. It also supports evidence-based treatment and better clinical decision-making.

Lab Services and Capacity

The laboratory currently holds NABL accreditation for 50 test parameters across Biochemistry and Haematology. Its services include:

  • Blood glucose and HbA1c testing.
  • Liver and kidney function tests.
  • Lipid and thyroid profiles.
  • Electrolytes and complete blood counts.

During 2025–26, the lab conducted over 1.52 lakh investigations for more than 9,300 patients. It uses advanced systems and digital reporting tools, with reports shared through SMS, email, and WhatsApp.

Institutional Growth at CARI Bengaluru

CARI Bengaluru has expanded sharply in recent years. OPD footfall rose from 18,918 in 2021 to over 51,300 in 2026. Laboratory investigations increased from 2,770 to more than 1.55 lakh in the same period. Panchakarma and para-surgical procedures also expanded . Since inpatient services began in July 2024, bed occupancy has remained near full capacity. The institute has also strengthened medicinal plant validation and continues around 20–25 research projects annually.

Path to Quality Benchmarking

The laboratory began with a single semi-automated biochemistry analyser and was later upgraded under the Centre of Excellence Scheme of the Ministry of Ayush. It received NABL entry-level certification in November 2022 and then progressed to ISO 15189:2022 through documentation, quality implementation, and assessment. CARI Bengaluru had earlier secured NABH and NABL entry-level certifications and is also moving towards BIS IS/ISO 9001:2015 certification.
