Hussain Sagar lake in Hyderabad is facing a strong foul smell during the summer months as rising temperatures have intensified a thick green algal bloom on the water surface. The odour has affected several busy public areas around the lake, including Tank Bund, Necklace Road, NTR Gardens, Lumbini Park, PVNR Marg near Ranigunj, and the Hyderabad Boats Club Sailing Annexe area. The issue has become more noticeable as temperatures have touched nearly 40 degrees Celsius.
Cause of the Stench
The Budda Purnima Project Authority, which manages the lake, has linked the smell to severe heat and the growth of algae. A thick layer of green bloom has formed on the water, reducing water quality and creating a strong odour along the shores. Summer heat has intensified the problem and made it more visible and unpleasant for commuters and visitors.
Bioremediation Measures
The authority has begun bioremediation to control the smell and reduce organic pollution.
- Microbial solutions are being sprayed on the lake.
- The solution contains beneficial microbes such as lactic acid bacteria, yeasts and photosynthetic bacteria.
- The number of tankers used for spraying has been increased from 3–5 to 30 per day.
- Each tanker has a capacity of 3,000 litres.
Planned Support for Algae Removal
The authority is also considering hiring five to six speed boats from Telangana Tourism. These boats are expected to help break the algal bloom, which would make bioremediation more effective. Breaking the surface bloom is seen as important for improving water treatment and reducing the odour faster.
Lake Restoration and Excavation Work
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority recently procured an amphibious excavator worth Rs 2.87 crore for lake restoration. It is meant for desilting, dredging, weed removal, bund strengthening, and clearing sludge and debris. However, operations with the machine have not yet started at Hussain Sagar lake.
