India Leads in AI Adoption, Downloads Rise 69%

India recorded a 69% year-on-year rise in generative AI app downloads as of 23 April 2026. ChatGPT ranked among the top apps in India by installs and revenue on that date.

Generative AI App Market

India was the world’s largest market for generative AI app downloads in 2025, with a 207% year-on-year increase. India accounted for about 20% of global generative AI app downloads in 2025, while Indian users contributed about 1% of in-app purchases.

Personal Health AI Use

A Boston Consulting Group study dated 21 April 2026 placed India at the top of personal health AI adoption. The study found that 85% of Indian consumers used AI-powered tools, compared with 50% in the United States, 43% in the United Kingdom, and 34% in Japan.

AI Hiring and Workforce Use

LinkedIn’s 2026 report, released on 27 April 2026, placed India first in AI hiring growth with nearly 60% growth. The Microsoft and LinkedIn 2024 Work Trend Index, released on 17 May 2024, found that 92% of knowledge workers in India used AI at work, compared with a global average of 75%.

Industry Adoption in India

Teamlease Digital data for FY 2024 placed AI adoption in key Indian industries at about 48%. The Banking and Financial Services sector recorded 68% adoption in FY24, while the technology sector recorded 60% to 65%.

Global and Domestic Benchmarks

A Deloitte report released on 16 May 2024 placed India among the frontrunners in generative AI use in Asia Pacific. The report stated that 93% of students and 83% of employees in India engaged with generative AI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on 2 April 2026 that India is emerging as a global leader in AI adoption. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 on 19 February 2026 that India is leading the world in AI adoption.
