Lakhwar Multipurpose Project on Yamuna Gains Pace

North India’s water and energy security is set to receive a boost as the 300 MW Lakhwar multipurpose project on the Yamuna river in Dehradun district, Uttarakhand, moves ahead. The project is a major hydropower and water management initiative aimed at regulated water supply, renewable power generation, irrigation support and flood moderation.

Project Overview

The Lakhwar project is being developed by UJVN Limited as a national project. It is designed to optimise the use of Yamuna river water for multiple purposes. The project is expected to generate about 572 million units of electricity annually. It will also support drinking water and irrigation needs.

Regional Significance

The project is important for several states in North India. It is expected to help regulate water supply for:

  • Uttarakhand
  • Uttar Pradesh
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Haryana
  • Rajasthan
  • Delhi

It will also strengthen Uttarakhand’s power generation capacity and contribute to downstream flood moderation.

Review and Execution

A high-level review of the project assessed progress in dam construction, underground works and related infrastructure. Officials were directed to adhere strictly to timelines and speed up construction. Coordinated execution among all stakeholders was stressed to avoid delays and ensure steady progress.

Environmental and Policy Importance

The project is being monitored closely at the central level. Environmental compliance and rehabilitation measures are being reviewed alongside construction work. The project fits into India’s wider strategy for sustainable water resource management, improved river basin utilisation and transition towards green energy.
