Manipur Launches Ningol Van Initiative

Manipur Launches Ningol Van Initiative

On the occasion of the International Day of Forests, Manipur renewed its focus on forest protection, prevention of deforestation, and action against illegal activities, including poppy cultivation. A major show was the launch of the Ningol Van Initiative, designed to strengthen community participation in forest conservation and show the role of women in protecting biodiversity and promoting sustainability.

Forest Conservation Push

Manipur has one of the highest forest covers in the country, with over 74 per cent of its geographical area under forests. Forests are central to the state’s ecology, livelihoods, food security, and future resource needs. The observance underlined the need to protect forest wealth as a shared responsibility.

Ningol Van Initiative

The new initiative aims to deepen women’s involvement in conservation efforts. Ningols will be encouraged to play a stronger role in nurturing nature and supporting sustainable practices. The state plans to extend similar initiatives across all 16 districts, linking conservation with community participation.

Livelihoods and Women’s Role

Forest-linked economic activity remains in Manipur. Under Van Dhan Vikas Kendras, 11 micro food-processing units have been established with modern facilities, and around 95 per cent are operated by women. Officials said this reflects the central role of women in primary economic activities. The number of such units is expected to rise to provide more livelihood support.

Illegal Activities and Reclaimed Land Use

Authorities also flagged concerns over man-made forest fires, illegal hill earth excavation, unauthorised stone and boulder extraction, and poppy cultivation. This year, 970 hectares of illegal poppy cultivation in hill districts have been destroyed. Plans are in place to use the reclaimed land for bamboo plantations and essential oil crops. The event ended with a tree plantation drive to reinforce environmental conservation efforts.
