Illegal Sand Mining in Subarnarekha River

Illegal Sand Mining in Subarnarekha River

Illegal sand mining and smuggling from the Subarnarekha river in Balasore district has triggered a strong intervention by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The ministry has directed state agencies to take visible action within 15 days to stop mining activity, protect complainants, and inform the chief secretary and director general of police. The issue has drawn complaints from residents of 15 villages affected by riverbed excavation and heavy sand transport.

Ministry Intervention

The ministry held a virtual hearing with senior officials and village representatives. It ordered immediate steps to curb illegal extraction and transport of sand from the river in Jaleswar block. The direction stressed visible action at the mining sites within a short time frame. It also asked authorities to ensure protection for those who raised complaints.

Villagersโ€™ Allegations

Residents said sand is being transported day and night towards the West Bengal border. They claimed that illegal mining has spread beyond control and has affected more than 15 riverside villages. Villagers alleged that repeated protests have not stopped the activity and that the local administration has failed to act effectively.

Environmental And Law And Order Concerns

The complaints brought into light serious environmental damage, pollution, and damage to river ecology. Villagers also said reckless movement of tractors and dumpers has led to frequent accidents and threats to lives and property. They alleged a nexus between the sand mafia and local police, and said criminal cases linked to smuggling have increased.

Public Safety And Demands

A recent accident in which a woman was injured by a dumper intensified public anger and led to road blockades. Villagers have demanded strict enforcement action, installation of CCTV cameras at river entry points, and stronger protection against intimidation, false cases, and attacks linked to opposition to illegal mining.
