CAQM Reviews NCR Air Quality Enforcement

The 128th meeting of the Enforcement Task Force of the Commission for Air Quality Management in NCR and Adjoining Areas reviewed inspections and enforcement action across the National Capital Region for the period 14 March 2026 to 26 March 2026. The review focused on construction and demolition sites, industrial units, road dust control and diesel generator sets, all of which remain major contributors to air pollution in NCR.

Inspection Drive Across NCR

During the 13-day period, Flying Squad teams carried out 175 inspections. These included 23 inspections at C&D sites, 37 in the industrial sector and 114 related to DG set violations. The Task Force also reviewed road dust management measures in key urban areas.

Enforcement Action Taken

Based on inspection findings, closure proposals were made for 10 units. Sealing of DG sets was proposed for 27 units. Show Cause Notices were issued to 8 units, while Environmental Compensation was proposed for 1 unit. The review also stressed the need for focused checks in priority sectors such as DG sets, C&D sites, road dust and stone crushers.

Road Dust Violations in Urban Areas

Inspections in Meerut and Faridabad covered 16 zones and identified 140 violations. Directions were issued to the concerned municipal bodies for corrective action. In cases of repeated non-compliance, issuance of Show Cause Notices was also indicated as a possible step.

Cumulative Enforcement Status

The updated cumulative status showed that 26,672 units, projects and entities have been inspected so far by CAQM Flying Squads. Based on these inspections, 1,755 closure directions have been issued. Of these, 1,330 resumption orders were issued after compliance verification. A further 123 cases were transferred to State Pollution Control Boards and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee for final decision, while 302 entities remain under examination. The Commission reiterated the need for stronger enforcement, better inter-agency coordination and strict compliance with environmental norms to curb air pollution in NCR.
