India Submits Updated Climate Targets

India Submits Updated Climate Targets

India submitted its revised Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for the 2031-2035 period to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on 24 April 2026. The Union Cabinet approved the updated climate action goals in March 2026.

Nationally Determined Contributions

NDCs are national climate pledges under the Paris Agreement of 2015. Each party to the agreement submits targets for mitigation, adaptation, and implementation support.

India’s Updated Targets

  • India has pledged 60% cumulative installed electric power capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2035, subject to technology transfer and low-cost international finance.
  • India has committed to reduce the emissions intensity of its gross domestic product by 47% by 2035 from the 2005 level.
  • India has set a target to create a carbon sink of 3.5 to 4.0 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent through forest and tree cover by 2035 over the 2005 stock.

Conditionality And Support

India has stated that the fulfilment of climate commitments by developing countries depends on finance, technology transfer, and capacity building from developed countries. These three terms are used in the UNFCCC framework for implementation support.

Previous NDC Submissions

This is India’s third NDC submission. India submitted earlier NDCs in 2015 for 2025 targets and in 2022 for 2030 targets.

Related Policy Areas

The updated NDC includes measures linked to sustainable lifestyles, the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, and adaptation investment in agriculture and water resources. Agriculture and water resources are among the sectors listed in India’s climate adaptation planning.
