Bamboo Projects Launched in North East

Bamboo Projects Launched in North East

The Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region and Communications launched two bamboo projects worth Rs. 82.5 crore in Guwahati. The initiative aims to strengthen bamboo-based livelihoods, improve market access, and promote engineered bamboo products in the North Eastern region. It also reflects the wider push to position the region as a centre of growth, skill development, and enterprise.

Project Overview

The two projects are part of efforts to expand the bamboo economy in the North East. They focus on training, production, and commercial linkages. A traditional bamboo artisans cluster will be established to train more than 4,400 youths. The cluster is expected to support skill development and preserve traditional craftsmanship.

Engineered Bamboo Units

Two production units will be set up to promote engineered bamboo products. These units will come up at:

  • Karbi Anglong in Assam
  • Mokokchung in Nagaland

The units are intended to add value to bamboo raw material and increase industrial use of bamboo. Engineered bamboo can be used in furniture, construction, and other commercial applications.

Market Access and Commerce Partnerships

The North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council signed three memoranda of understanding for market access and commerce support. The partners are:

  • Amazon
  • Flipkart
  • All Time Plastics

These partnerships aim to improve sales channels, expand digital commerce, and connect artisans and producers with wider markets. The initiative is expected to help bamboo products reach consumers beyond the region.

Significance for the North East

The projects underline the role of bamboo in local employment, rural enterprise, and sustainable industry. They also support the broader development of the North Eastern region through skill creation and value addition. Bamboo-based industries can contribute to inclusive growth, especially in areas with strong traditional craft traditions.
