Goa Waterjet Testing Facility Inaugurated

Goa Waterjet Testing Facility Inaugurated

The Indian Coast Guard has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Waterjet Production and Testing Facility in Goa. The facility is designed to strengthen India’s ability to manufacture, test and maintain waterjet propulsion systems used in high-speed vessels. It marks a major step in maritime self-reliance and supports the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.

Strategic Significance

The new facility improves India’s domestic capability in a critical naval and coast guard technology segment. Waterjet propulsion is widely used in fast patrol vessels and interceptor boats because it offers high speed, manoeuvrability and shallow-water operation. By hosting such a facility, India becomes the third country in the world with this advanced production and testing setup, after the United States and South Korea.

Operational Impact

The Indian Coast Guard currently operates more than 100 MJP waterjet propulsion systems across its fleet. Another 42 units are planned for ships under construction. The Goa facility will support:

  • Testing of waterjet systems before deployment.
  • Life-cycle maintenance and sustainment within India.
  • Faster repair and reduced dependence on foreign services.
  • Improved operational readiness for high-speed vessels.

Industrial and Economic Benefits

The facility is expected to strengthen India’s maritime manufacturing ecosystem. It will create opportunities for micro, small and medium enterprises in the supply chain. It may also generate skilled employment and deepen domestic expertise in advanced propulsion technologies. This can help build a stronger industrial base for defence and maritime engineering.

Broader Maritime Relevance

The facility is also intended to serve as a regional hub for South Asia and adjoining regions. Its establishment reflects sustained efforts since 2023 to expand indigenisation in maritime defence. The development enhances India’s strategic autonomy by reducing reliance on imported technology and by improving long-term sustainment of critical maritime assets.
