IGNCA Publishes Janjati Gaurav Book

The Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA) has published a book titled Janjati Gaurav to document the history, culture and contributions of India’s tribal communities. The publication focuses on the role of tribal societies in the freedom struggle and in nation-building. It also marks tribal resistance movements, archival material, and scholarly interpretations linked to prominent tribal leaders from different regions.

Purpose of the Publication

The book aims to promote awareness of tribal heritage, valor and cultural traditions. It brings together historical narratives and research-based accounts for scholars, students and the general public. The publication also seeks to preserve oral traditions and historical memory connected with tribal communities.

Tribal Freedom Struggle

The book refers to several tribal uprisings and heroic figures associated with anti-colonial resistance. It marks the sacrifices of tribal freedom fighters and the wider contribution of tribal communities to India’s independence movement. Such documentation helps place tribal participation within the broader national freedom struggle.

Mangarh Dham and Tribal Memory

A major reference point in the publication is Mangarh Dham, a site linked to the tribal uprising led by Govind Guru. The site is associated with the martyrdom of numerous tribal freedom fighters. It remains an important symbol of tribal resistance and collective memory in western India.

Government Initiatives for Tribal Heritage

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has sanctioned 11 Tribal Freedom Fighters Museums across 10 States. Ethnographic museums have also been approved to display rare artefacts, traditional attire, ornaments, weapons and other cultural items. These initiatives aim to document, preserve and exhibit tribal heritage in a structured manner.
