The Indian Navy’s sail training ship INS Sudarshini will begin Lokayan 26 on 20 January 2026. The 10-month transoceanic voyage will cover more than 22,000 nautical miles and call at 18 foreign ports in 13 countries. The deployment combines sail training, maritime diplomacy and cultural outreach, while showcasing India’s seafaring heritage and the idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.
Flagship Transoceanic Deployment
Lokayan 26 is designed as a long-range sailing expedition across multiple oceans. The voyage will expose trainees to traditional seamanship, navigation and life aboard a tall ship. More than 200 Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard trainees are expected to take part in intensive training during the mission.
International Tall-Ship Participation
A major feature of the deployment is INS Sudarshini’s participation in two prominent international tall-ship events:
- Escale à Sète in France.
- SAIL 250 in New York, United States.
These events will show India’s maritime traditions before an international audience and strengthen the ship’s role as a symbol of naval goodwill.
Training and Maritime Cooperation
During the voyage, trainees will interact with personnel from other navies, creating opportunities for professional exchange and shared learning. INS Sudarshini will also conduct training interactions and maritime partnership engagements with visiting countries. These engagements are aimed at deepening maritime cooperation and supporting the vision of MAHASAGAR.
INS Sudarshini’s Maritime Legacy
INS Sudarshini is the second sail training ship of the Indian Navy. It has already covered over 1,40,000 nautical miles. Lokayan 26 continues its role in promoting India’s maritime strength, professionalism and cultural diplomacy across the world.
