UIDAI Launches AI Biometric Deduplication Platform

UIDAI Launches AI Biometric Deduplication Platform

India’s Unique Identification Authority has introduced a next-generation AI-enabled biometric deduplication and document verification platform to strengthen Aadhaar enrolment and update security. The new system is designed to improve accuracy, reduce fraud, and speed up verification at population scale. It combines advanced biometric matching with document authentication to reinforce the principle of one unique identity per resident.

AI-Enabled Biometric Deduplication

UIDAI has developed advanced artificial intelligence models for fingerprint, face, and iris matching. These models were built in collaboration with the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. They run on high-performance accelerated computing infrastructure to process large volumes of enrolment and update transactions efficiently.

  • Every new Aadhaar enrolment is cross-checked against the full existing database.
  • The system improves deduplication accuracy during enrolment and update processes.
  • It supports secure processing at population scale.

Document Verification Through Digital Infrastructure

To reduce enrolment fraud, UIDAI has also introduced AI-based document metadata extraction and verification. The platform checks documents against source records using Digilocker application programming interfaces. Semantic analysis is used to extract and validate document details.

  • The system helps verify authenticity of submitted documents.
  • It reduces manual effort and turnaround time.
  • It improves service quality for Aadhaar holders.

Role in India’s Digital Security Framework

The initiative is part of a broader digital safety architecture aimed at protecting citizen data and trust. UIDAI’s biometric deduplication system is among the largest of its kind in the world. The upgraded AI layer is intended to strengthen identity integrity and prevent duplicate or fraudulent records.

Nationwide Rollout and Administrative Impact

UIDAI has already completed enhanced deduplication rollouts in several states and is expected to extend the exercise nationwide in the coming months. The platform is likely to improve operational efficiency, reduce errors, and support faster Aadhaar-related services across India.
