Rare Marine Amphipod Found in Indian Waters

Rare Marine Amphipod Found in Indian Waters

A rare marine amphipod species has been recorded for the first time in Indian waters from Arjyapalli in Ganjam district, Odisha. The shrimp-like crustacean, identified as Stenothoe lowryi, was collected from a rocky habitat and confirmed by marine science researchers of Berhampur University. The species was earlier known from Malaysia, while its wider distribution remains unclear. The finding adds a new record to India’s marine biodiversity and marks the ecological richness of Odisha’s coastline.

Discovery at Arjyapalli

Eight specimens were collected from the rocky shore at Arjyapalli in January last year. After detailed analysis, researchers confirmed the organism as a new and rare marine amphipod for Indian waters. The species is small, measuring about 5.5 mm in length, and is distinguished by its large claws and rocky habitat preference.

Scientific Significance

The discovery is important for marine taxonomy and biodiversity documentation. The species had previously been recorded only from Malaysia. Its presence in India suggests that the distribution of some marine crustaceans may be wider than earlier known. Such findings help improve understanding of coastal ecosystems and species diversity along the Bay of Bengal region.

Ecological Role and Ongoing Study

Researchers believe the species may play a role in the marine food web, although its exact ecological function is still being studied. Molecular and ecological investigations are continuing to understand its biology, habitat needs and evolutionary relationships. The research has been published in a recent issue of the Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom.

Odisha’s Marine Biodiversity Research

The study was supported under the Mukhyamantri Research Innovation Extramural Programme of the Odisha State Higher Education Council for 2024-25. Berhampur University researchers have also reported other amphipod discoveries from Chilika lagoon in recent years, underlining Odisha’s growing importance in marine biodiversity research.
