The rare Sirkeer Malkoha (Taccocua leschenaultii) has been recorded for the first time in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. A forest department team from the Upper Yamuna forest division spotted and photographed the bird near Barkot in early December. The sighting is notable because the species is usually found in the plains of Uttarakhand and in dry scrub forests and open woodlands below 1,000 metres.
Key Identification Features
- The Sirkeer Malkoha is a long-tailed bird with an olive-brown body.
- It is identified by its curved red beak.
- The species is generally associated with dry scrub and open woodland habitats.
Significance of the Sighting
The bird’s appearance in the higher reaches of Uttarkashi is considered unusual and important for research. Forest officials noted that such movement may be linked to environmental changes. Birds are also regarded as highly sensitive indicators of climate change, making the record relevant for ecological studies.
Biodiversity Value of Uttarkashi
Uttarkashi district already has a rich bird diversity, with around 370 recorded bird species. The addition of the Sirkeer Malkoha expands the district’s avian checklist further. The discovery also suggests that other rare species may be present in the region, which is known for its biodiversity richness.
Conservation and Research Implications
The first record of the Sirkeer Malkoha in Uttarkashi strengthens the case for continued bird surveys and habitat monitoring in the Upper Yamuna region. It may help improve understanding of species movement, habitat shifts, and the impact of changing environmental conditions on mountain ecosystems.
