Khudiram Bose

A fearless revolutionary from Bengal, Khudiram Bose was one of the youngest leaders of the Indian independence movement. Born in 1889, his parents were Trailokynath Bose and mother Lakshmipriya Devi. Khudiram lost his parents at a very early age. He was raised by his sister and her husband who enrolled him in school.

Khudiram joined the Anushilan Samiti at the age of 15 and got involved in revolutionary activities. He learnt how to make bombs which would be planted in front of police stations.

The Anushilan Samiti was formed in 1902 by Pramathanath Mitra, a barrister and supporter of Indian nationalism. Motivated by the speeches of Swami Vivekananda and Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s ‘Anandamath’. The organisation secretly propagated extremist anti-British revolutionary activities during the first three decades of 20th century.

Muzaffarpur Conspiracy Case:

The defining moment of Khudiram's life came in 1908 when he and Prafulla Chaki also a revolutionary, were set on the task of assassinating Douglas Kingsford, district magistrate of Muzaffarpur in Bihar. Kingsford was a magistrate in Bengal who was transferred to Muzaffarpur. The magistrate’s fierce actions on revolutionaries had enraged the young nationalists who decided to hurl a bomb on him.

There were several unsuccessful attempts to kill Kingsford. Finally, on April 30, 1908 after much planning, Khudiram threw a bomb on a carriage assuming Kingsford was in it. But in real it was carrying the wife and daughter of barrister Pringle Kennedy. Kingsford escaped, but the woman and girl died.

This incident alerted everyone and the Calcutta police set out to arrest Khudiram and Chaki who had escaped. Before the police arrested him, Prafulla Chaki killed himself. The police arrested Khudiram Bose from a railway station next morning where he had reached after walking 25 miles. The entire town came out to see the handcuffed 18-year-old boy brought to Muzaffarpur police station. On July 13, 1908, death sentence was pronounced for Khudiram Bose, on August 11, 1908 he was executed.
