Performing Arts Awards and Honours (States)

Performing Arts Awards and Honours (States)

While national honors like the Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards set a pan-India benchmark, various State Governments in India have instituted specialized honors to preserve regional linguistic and cultural identities. These awards focus on regional classical music (Hindustani/Carnatic), folk traditions, and theater, often carrying significant financial grants and state protocol status.

Maharashtra: Maharashtra Bhushan and Sangeet Awards

Maharashtra possesses a robust institutional framework for the promotion of Hindustani Classical Music and Marathi Theatre (Sangeet Natak).

  • Maharashtra Bhushan: The highest civilian award of the state. While multi-disciplinary, it has frequently honored legends of performing arts like Lata Mangeshkar (1997) and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi (2002).
  • Bharat Ratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Rajya Sanskrutik Puraskar: Specifically dedicated to classical music, carrying a purse of ₹5 Lakh.
  • Sangeetacharya Annasaheb Kirloskar Award: Conferred for lifetime achievement in the field of musical drama (Sangeet Natak), preserving the state’s unique 19th-century theatrical heritage.

Uttar Pradesh: Yash Bharti and Sangeet Natak Academy Awards

Uttar Pradesh, being the cradle of the Lucknow and Benaras Gharanas, focuses on Kathak and classical music.

  • Yash Bharti Award: The highest state honor, instituted in 1994. It recognizes remarkable contributions to culture, music, and drama. Recipients often receive a ₹11 Lakh cash prize and a monthly pension. Notable awardees include Amitabh Bachchan and Pandit Vishwanath.
  • UP Sangeet Natak Academy Puraskar: Awarded annually to artists specializing in classical vocal, instrumental music, and Kathak.

West Bengal: Banga Bibhushan and Banga Bhushan

Instituted in 2011, these awards celebrate the “Bengaliness” of art and culture, often honoring practitioners of Rabindra Sangeet, Baul music, and Bengali Theatre.

Karnataka: Rajyotsava Awards

Announced on November 1 (Karnataka Rajyotsava Day), these awards are notable for their highly specific sub-categorization of performing arts.

  • Yakshagana: A unique category dedicated to the traditional theater form of Coastal Karnataka.
  • Music: Covers both Carnatic and Hindustani traditions, reflecting Karnataka’s dual cultural heritage.
  • Folklore: Recognizes practitioners of Dollu Kunitha, Veeragase, and other indigenous dance forms.
  • Prize: Includes a gold medal, a cash prize of ₹5 Lakh, and a citation.

Kerala: Swathi Sangeetha Puraskaram

Named after the visionary composer-king Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, this is the highest honor in the field of music awarded by the Kerala State Government.

  • Domain: Conferred for outstanding contributions to Carnatic Music.
  • Institutional Body: Administered by the Kerala State Sangeetha Nataka Akademi.
  • Kerala State Film Awards: Includes specific honors for Choreography and Playback Singing, which are pivotal to the state’s performing arts ecosystem.

Gujarat: Gaurav Puraskar

The Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Academy implements the Gaurav Puraskar scheme to recognize excellence in regional performing arts.

  • Focus Areas: Traditional music, dance, and folk arts like Garba, Dandia, and Bhavai (folk theatre).
  • Gujarat Garima Awards: Conferred during the Gujarat Foundation Day (May 1) for distinguished contributions to the state’s cultural prestige.

Other Notable Regional Honors

  • Kalaimamani (Tamil Nadu): Conferred by the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram for excellence in literature, music, and theatre. It is highly regarded in the Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam circuits.
  • Sarala Puraskar (Odisha): While primarily literary, it often overlaps with cultural contributions; however, the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi awards are the primary honors for Odissi dance and music.
  • Srimanta Sankardev Award (Assam): Honors greatness in journalism, literature, and the Sattriya performing arts, named after the 15th-century polymath.

Fact Sheet for UPSC Aspirants

  • Article 18 Compatibility: Similar to national awards, state awards are not “titles.” They cannot be used as prefixes or suffixes to the name of the recipient.
  • Common Denominator: Most state-level performing arts awards are administered through their respective State Sangeet Natak Academies, which function as autonomous bodies under the State Department of Culture.
  • Selection Trend: In recent years, there has been a shift toward recognizing “Unsung Heroes” of tribal and folk arts (e.g., the inclusion of Siddis in Karnataka’s awards or Bauls in Bengal).
